November 30, 2011 Reducing VCC's environmental footprint
A quick glance at Wendy Avis’ impressive resume leaves no doubt she is a passionate advocate for the environment. Avis has begun her role as Vancouver Community College’s manager of environment and sustainability. This is a new position at VCC.

Avis says, “By integrating sustainability values and practices at the college, I hope to harness the power of everyone at VCC to make us a leader in reducing our environmental footprint.”
Avis has 15 years experience in the sustainability field, most recently with B.C. Hydro and Environment Canada. She specializes in public outreach and has done a variety of field research on climate change policy and reducing emissions. She holds degrees from Brock University and UBC.

“We only have one planet, and it is everyone’s responsibility to care for it for future generations,” Avis adds.
VCC and the environmentVCC’s environmental sustainability advisory group is committed to developing fresh ideas that support and promote environmental responsibility at the college. Recent initiatives include a college-wide awareness campaign to reduce power consumption and paper use, and a Green Fair to educate students and employees about green transportation options, conservation, and local food choices. Committee members meet monthly. VCC is also in the process of approving an environmental framework for the college.
