SPCA launches holiday pet campaign ...
Hoping thousands of animals are adopted
VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The BC SPCA is launching a campaign to encourage you to adopt a pet this Christmas. It's called Home for the Holidays and 4,000 animals in BC are in need of a loving home.
Despite previous reports telling you to hold off on adopting a pet as a
gift, Lorie Chortyk with the organization says getting a puppy, kitty or
bunny is now encouraged.
"Most humane societies strongly discourage giving pets as gifts but often the holidays can be a great time to adopt if people have thought through their decision because people tend to take time off work, kids are home from schools, so you actually have more time to get to know a new family member."
Chortyk says people will have to ensure they have enough time and resources to care for an animal.
"People always have to do their homework when they're adopting a pet or purchasing a pet because, really, these are living beings. They're part of your family, there are costs involved and there are time commitments involved," says Chortyk.
She adds adopting from the SPCA is the way to go because all of the animals have been spayed or neutered. Chortyk adds you won't need to worry about vaccinations, medical treatments and vet checks because that has already been done.
The goal is to find permanent homes for all the pets in December. Last year about 1,600 pets were adopted in December of 2010.
